Chapter Ten: The Shell and the Glasses
Most of the boys have left with Jack to live on Castle Rock, and only Sam, Eric and a few of the younger boys remain with Ralph and Piggy.
At Castle Rock, we see Jack becoming more cruel to the boys and punishing some of them for no reason. He demands that a couple of the boys raid Ralph's camp and steal fire. When Ralph and Piggy are asleep, they are beaten by Jack's raiders and a log from the fire is taken. However, it is soon discovered that Piggy's glasses have been stolen too.

The only way to light up the fire at the isolated island is to uses Simon 's glasses. Jack' s tribe steals his glasses because they have no rules , no humanity and civilization . The acted like wild. So they are the savagery tribe.
Glasses symbolizes civilization, Piggy's glasses were stolen, it means that civilization is falling.
Piggy's glasses are necessary to light the fire, that is the reason because of Jack has stolen them, in a savage manner, with the unique way he knows like violence. But it is very important also to consider that the glasses are practically the Piggy's eyes. Never in any group, anyone has thought about Piggy, only the need to light the fire.
A question came to my mind: Why Golding does not propose a different alternative method to light the fire? It has been shown in many books, movies and boy scouts procedures with stones and dried wood.
Jack’s group stole Piggy's glasses to light the fire up but glasses also represent the intelligence to plan ideas that they used to build civilization at the beginning. Now that they lost sensibility and empathy with Simon’s murder, intelligence is other value they need to rid of to become savages.
Ralph and Piggy were shoked for Simon's death. Ralph feels his fault for that. Jack shows himself like a cruel despotic leader. Jack and his huters stole Piggy's glasses, because thay need them for making fire. Now Jack understood that fire important for their life.
Piggy's glasses represent the power of intellectualism. Jack stealing the glasses leaves the Ralph's group powerless. So he takes the absolute control of the whole island in his hand. But the significant is Jack uses the glasses to make fire just for cooking meat not for making signal smoke. Loss of glasses by Ralph's group means also loss of hope to rescue: "Ralph tried indignantly to remember. There was something good about fire. Something overwhelmingly good." (P. 127) In addition to that, Jack makes Piggy almost blind without glasses. It seems it is Golding's foreshadowing of Piggy's death on the following chapter: "...They came for something else. Ralph-- what am I going to do?" (P.131)
Piggy glasses symbolize civilization, and hope. Jack stealing the glasses, because he wants to take the absolute control of the island.
Is very significant because piggy’s glasses it was the fire was made and the fire meant for Ralph hope and rescued.
Manuel:
Piggy´s glasses is the simbol of rationality and intelligence. The hunters want to possess it so they obligate the rest to join into the savaggery and destroy any sign of civilitation.
