Lord of the Flies

Chapter Six: Beast from the Air

In this chapter an air battle is fought, but the boys are all asleep and don't notice. A dead parachutist gets caught on the mountainside. When the twins awake they think it is the beast, and go back and report the "beast with wings" to the rest of the group.

Reports of the beast sighting frightens all of the boys, so the older ones go to the mountain to see if they could find it, but they soon lose interest and don't complete their journey.

Here is a link to the audio. Chapter six starts at 3:06:50.

In this chapter Jack and Ralph lead the expedition to the mountain together, and it seems like 'old times' when there was peace between them. In the comments section below, tell me whether or not you think this union will last. Why do you think so?

I think the union between Ralph and Jack will not be last.
Conflicts were appeared for both of them. Civilization and savagery had shown obviously among Ralph and Jack..
This is what I thought.

I think the union will not last long because Ralph and Jack have different ideals.

I think this union won't last. Because Jack tasted the blood and he won't stop. I don't know but maybe in the next following chapters Jack will win another "triumphs" and this will give him more power. Ralph cannot stand against this brute force.

I feel like this union won't less in the future.
It feels like both of the kids trying there best to keep a normal relationship, but at the same time, it feels fake.
Ralph give Jack the space to lead and express himself, letting him go and try to find the Beastie and "show up" his hunter skills. at the same time, in my opinion, this tribute is not authentic.

I think no. Because we know that Jack is authoritarian in everything. In the last part of this chapter Ralph didn’t like the place that they found, but Jack wants to built a fort. This is a clear example that maybe they can be in peace but they do not get union in their ideas.

I think RALPH is very authoritarian over jack, but they have different ideas.
And I feel like this union won't less in the future.

I think, Jack and Ralph can't have normal friendships anymore, because they are different, they lost faith and hope. Each of them tries to stay strong. In this situation shows that their need to stay together because they do not know what kind of the beast.

This peace is momentary, empowered by the common fear after the news from the twins. as the time pass and they realize there is no beast, the differences between Ralph and Jack will come back again.

I think Ralph and Jack have done a temporal union, because they both know skills of each other and they want to be partners in the mountain's expedition. However, this won't be a long friendship due their conflicts about leadership and power are still not solved.

The union won't be last. Because they have argued from chapter three, and never get the consensus reached. Even in the event "they lead the expedition to the mountain together", Jack and Ralph are with two different ideas, Jack wants to kill the beast and Ralph wants to make the littlnus feel safe.

I don't think this union would be last in the future. Since chapter four, their disagreement has already begun obviously about to build the shelter or to hunt the pig. And because that action caused them to miss an opportunity to be rescued. Jack's mental has been changed further and further into savagery. At the last of this chapter, they have a conflict about the stay or leave of the castle rock.

I don't think this union will last.Conversely,I think it is an important turning point in this novel.Their idea is more and more different.Civilization and savagery, power and leadership. The development of the story is all about the difference in their views.

I think maybe no, because Jake is not person who can operate in agreement with his competitor unless following only his goals.

Manuel:
Any union will work for Ralph and Jack. They are going in different ways. Jack is using the beast to get importance and influence over the others. Ralph is just doing what he has to do as a leader.

Peace is temporary and it is difficult to cooperate with different ways of thinking.

When I read this novel first time I did know an answer. It seemed that Jack followed Ralph because he really decided to help him: he told that he could not to leave Ralph without support. Honestly reading the novel again now, I don’t know it was true or not, because fear of the beast motivated Jack in this situation too. Despite his bravado and rudeness Jack was just a boy: he followed Ralph because it was uncomfortable for him to be alone and he was scared like others.

I think ralph and jack will be union again , maybe jack realized that he need Ralph h to figure out the parachute and beastie , and he might also realize there is hope if they were working together .

The plot of the novel develops in such a way that the conflict between Ralph and Jack becomes inevitable. Day by day Jack becomes more powerful and his influences to the boys are growing. Meanwhile, Jack loses his authority, because he started to think like Piggy, he became intelligent. The two things that hunters don’t like. Some author’s foreshadows tell us that somebody has to die. So, we will see what happen in the next chapters.

As for me, I think this union will not last. Because everyone can have their own idea or actions to deal with problems. And in this situation, they want to keep everyone to get rid of the beast.

I think, Jack and Ralph are temporally together, because each one of them thinks in different ways.
